Употребление as/while/when в значении, в «…то время как…»
1) Употребление as/while/when в значении, в «…то время как…» имеет место, когда говорят о действиях, которые одно из них длительный процесс, а другое однократное, мгновенное действие (PastSimple + when/as/ while + PastContinuous), например:
· While /as/when Mike and Sue were watching TV, the phone rang.
· The phone rang when/as/while Mike and Sue were watching TV.
· While /as/when Mike and Sue were watching TV, the phone rang.
· The phone rang when/as/while Mike and Sue were watching TV.
Употребление when.
2) When употребляется:
a) Если в главном предложении Past Continuous, а в придаточном Past Simple
Past Continuous + when + Past Simple
· She was writing a composition when she heard a ring.
· Nick was playing football when his father came.
· She was writing a composition when she heard a ring.
· Nick was playing football when his father came.
b) Когда действие следует сразу одно за другим:
· When the light went out, we turn on the torch.
· When we smelt the gas, we called the gas service.
· When we smelt the gas, we called the gas service.
c) Когда два одновременных действия в прошлом:
· I went in for basketball when I was 12 years old.
d) В значении “every time”:
· She still feels tired when she gets up at noon.
· When my son smoke, I feel the smell of it

· When my son smoke, I feel the smell of it
Когда употребляют As/when (not while).
3) As/when (not while) употребляются:
a) Два кратких однократных действий, причем одно вытекает из другого или зависит от другого.
· She’ll see the bus stop on the left as/when she crosses the street.
· When/as she open the fridge, the bad smell goes out.
· She’ll see the bus stop on the left as/when she crosses the street.

b) Когда два зависящие друг от друга действия меняются или когда одна вещь или действие влечет за собой изменения другого. Предпочтение отдается as:
· As the apples get rape, their flavours improve.
· She got better as she grew older
· She got better as she grew older
Употребление as/while (not when).
4) Употребляется as/while (not when) когда происходят два длинных действия одновременно.
• I went shopping while/as Mike cleaned the house.
Употребляется while (or when) not as (as может в таком предложении выражать because).
5) Употребляется while (or when) not as (as может в таком предложении выражать because) в предложениях типа.
While/when + Past Continuous, + Past Simple
• While she was playing table tennis, Mike went to the cinema. (As she was playing table tennis, может иметь значение because she was playing table tennis).
While/when + Past Continuous, + Past Simple
• While she was playing table tennis, Mike went to the cinema. (As she was playing table tennis, может иметь значение because she was playing table tennis).
В формальной и письменной речи существительное + be опускается в придаточных предложениях с when/while, если в главном и придаточном предложении субъект одно и то же лицо
· My wife was in Moscow when phoned.
· When called you have to answer.
· While riding my bike, I always wear the helmet.
· When called you have to answer.
